Who Qualifies for the ICT Program?
The Intra-Company Transfer (ICT) program allows established business owners, senior managers, and key employees to relocate to Canada and set up operations. This work permit pathway makes it possible to bring your family along, with open work permits for spouses and study permits for children.
Who Qualifies for the ICT Program?
The ICT program is designed for individuals who play a significant role in a company outside Canada and plan to take on a similar role in a Canadian branch, subsidiary, or affiliate. Eligible applicants include:
- Business owners and entrepreneurs who hold executive roles in an established company.
- Senior managers responsible for overseeing key business functions.
- Specialized knowledge employees with advanced expertise crucial to the company’s operations.
To qualify, the home company must be actively operating for at least 12 months, financially stable, and capable of supporting its expansion into Canada. The applicant must have worked with the company for at least a year in the last three years before applying.
Key Requirements for ICT Work Permit
For first-time ICT applications, immigration officers will assess:
- The viability of the Canadian business, including its ability to generate revenue and hire local employees.
- A detailed business plan outlining operations, market research, and financial projections.
- The company’s financial health and access to sufficient funds for expansion.
Investment Requirements
There is no fixed minimum investment, but companies must show financial capability. Based on experience, businesses with annual revenues above $250,000 and access to at least $100,000 in liquid funds have a stronger case. Additional resources may be required to sustain operations beyond the first year.
ICT Work Permit Application Process
- Set Up a Canadian Entity – Register the business as a branch, subsidiary, or affiliate.
- Develop a Business Plan – Outline market strategy, projected growth, and hiring plans.
- Prepare Documentation – Gather financial records, corporate filings, and proof of business activities.
- Submit the Application – Processing times vary by country, ranging from a few months to over six months. Some applicants from visa-exempt countries may apply at the port of entry.
Work Permit Duration and Renewals
ICT work permits are typically issued for one to two years, with renewals available for up to seven years for executives and five years for specialized knowledge workers. Newly established businesses in Canada often receive an initial one-year permit, with extensions granted based on business performance.
