How can foreign workers immigrate to Alberta?

If you are a temporary foreign worker (TFW) with aspirations to call Alberta, Canada, your new home, the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) opens doors to a multitude of possibilities. This economic immigration program, jointly run by the provincial governments of Alberta and the federal government of Canada, offers tailored streams for foreign workers seeking permanent residence inside of Alberta. Let’s learn more about the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program and its three remarkable streams for foreign workers.

What is the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP)?

The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) is a collaborative effort between the provincial and federal governments to nominate individuals for permanent residence in Alberta. Geared towards foreign workers, the program aims to address labour shortages, foster economic growth, and provide opportunities for skilled individuals to contribute to the vibrant Alberta community.

What is the Alberta Opportunity Stream and who is eligible?

The Alberta Opportunity Stream within the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) serves as a pivotal pathway for skilled candidates with a job offer from an Alberta employer. Tailored for those aiming for permanent residency while continuing to work in Alberta, this stream demands candidates to possess a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or hold an accepted LMIA exemption work permit. Eligibility criteria span residency and work permit types, occupation, language proficiency, education, and work experience. It’s essential to note that a valid work permit, based on specified criteria, is a prerequisite for application submission and assessment.

The most common point of confusion that our office consults on is for international students who have studied inside of Canada, but outside of Alberta, and then after acquiring their post-graduation open work permit, begin working inside of Alberta. This is an incredibly stressful situation as post-graduation open work permit holders (PGOWP) are typically not allowed to extend this work permit. Of course, COVID-19 was an exception where the Canadian government opened up temporary public policies to allow for extensions. That being said, the current rules and regulations maintain that a PGOWP can not be extended and can only be issued once.

In circumstances where a post-graduation open work permit holder is working inside of Alberta, but completed their education outside of Alberta, they must seek recourse through the Canadian Express Entry system. These candidates can still qualify for The Canadian Experience Class and if they are lucky, potentially be selected through the Alberta Express Entry stream.

What is the Alberta Express Entry Stream?

The Alberta Express Entry Stream, a component of AAIP, targets skilled workers in the federal Express Entry pool, offering an expedited path to permanent residency in Alberta. This invitation-only stream selects candidates based on factors such as in-demand occupations, immediate family connections in Alberta, job offers in key sectors like healthcare, or offers in the technology industry. However, and importantly, the government has not explicitly outlined what exactly leads to an invitation for one candidate over the other. That being said, if you find yourself meeting some of the requirements above, it is always a good idea to submit your Express Entry profile and indicate Alberta as your location of interest.

To be eligible, candidates must receive a Notification of Interest (NOI) letter, indicating alignment with Alberta’s economic, sectoral, and occupational priorities. This stream caters to those with a clear connection to Alberta’s evolving needs. These needs are often available through online resources on the Alberta government website and they are ever changing.

How does Alberta Rural Renewal Stream work?

The Rural Renewal Stream is designed to attract skilled workers with job offers from designated communities in rural Alberta. These communities, once designated, can recruit and endorse qualified candidates, facilitating the application process. Aimed at bolstering rural economic development, this stream plays a crucial role in supporting labour needs in sectors like agriculture, construction, tourism, and hospitality. The community endorsement process is a vital step, ensuring candidates have a direct connection to the endorsed community.

With a commitment to addressing labour shortages, fostering economic growth, and integrating skilled individuals into the vibrant Alberta community, AAIP offers tailored streams for a diverse range of candidates.
